2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter: The Ultimate Overlanding Machine Unveiled

Introducing the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter: Toyota's latest foray into the world of purpose-built overlanding machines. Unveiled as a concept at the 2022 SEMA show, the Trailhunter has evolved from a visionary proposal to an adventure-ready rig available straight off the dealership lot.

At the heart of the Trailhunter is a powerful yet efficient powertrain - a 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, paired with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission. This unit, supported by a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, generates a formidable 326 horsepower and a staggering 465 lb-ft of torque, nearly doubling the torque output of the current-gen V6 truck. Fuel economy details will be announced closer to the sale dates.

This purpose-built overlanding beast offers significant technical advancements. The Trailhunter includes a new Old Man Emu (OME) 4x4 Suspension by ARB, tuned for optimal off-road control and load carrying ability. This is supplemented by the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system, adjusting damping forces according to road conditions, ensuring a smooth ride regardless of terrain.

Tacoma Trailhunter comes exclusively in four-wheel-drive models in Canada, featuring an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range and Active Traction Control (A-TRAC). The Trailhunter also incorporates an electronic locking rear differential.

A robust set of off-road capabilities has been enhanced by collaborative engineering efforts between Toyota and Australia's ARB. This partnership has resulted in additions such as OME position sensitive 2.5-inch forged monotube shocks, steel rear bumper, robust recovery points, and a bed utility bar with removable MOLLE panels. The Trailhunter also sports a bronze-coloured "TOYOTA" heritage-inspired grille, a high-clearance exhaust tip, and rock rails, amongst other features.

Toyota also equips the Trailhunter with advanced technological features like a high-output integrated air compressor in the bed for quick tire inflation. The Multi-Terrain Monitor, displaying on a 14-inch touchscreen, allows drivers to detect obstacles on the trail, and the bed lighting setup ensures easy camp setup at night.

The 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter is more than just a truck; it's a factory-developed overlanding solution. It underlines Toyota's commitment to enhancing the quality, durability, and reliability it has been known for, while offering off-road enthusiasts a machine that's ready to tackle the harshest terrains right from the get-go.
